MANHATTAN, Kan. (Aug. 27, 2026) – On August 25, 2026, the Kansas Sorghum Executive and Strategic Committees adopted a new Five-Year Strategic Plan focused on expanding markets, driving resource conservation, harnessing innovation, and cultivating future industry leaders. The plan aims to improve the long-term profitability and resilience of Kansas’ sorghum producers and High Plains agriculture.
The first pillar, Expand Markets, will strengthen demand across food, feed, forage, fuel, and value-added products while building producer confidence in sorghum as a profitable rotation crop across the state.
The second pillar, Celebrate Innovation, will advance water-efficient agriculture through farmer-driven genetics, practical agronomy, and market-driven conservation outcomes.
The third pillar, Cultivate the Future, will increase producer engagement, expand understanding of sorghum’s value among changemakers and the public, and build out strategic networks with new and existing stakeholders.
“U.S. sorghum producers have faced numerous challenges in the past several years, but today, we are confidently rallying,” said Brant Peterson, Chairman of the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission from Stanton County. “As Kansas leads the nation with over half of all sorghum production in the U.S., our organizations are stepping up to lead within the industry and accelerate our advancements at home and abroad. Our innovative investments must translate into profitable opportunities tomorrow, for Kansas farmers, by Kansas farmers.”
